Rock 202 bangla album series#SOULS started hitting the national media, BTV and secured headlines in dailies with their series of concerts in Shilpa Kala Academy, Universities, Schools, Colleges & Open Air venues. The media termed this new musical trend as “BAND MUSIC”. Songs like Mon shudu mon chuyechey, Nodee eshey poth, Shukh pakhi, Dorgaye mom jeley, Torey putuler moto korey shajiye, was not only raging hits, it was a turning point of contemporary bangla music and became a milestone of modern music in the country. The use of western instruments like guitars drums keyboards generally used by the” rock n rollers” of the west was a fresh sound to the audience when fused with bangla lyrics and tune. Their first album released in 1982 was ” SUPER SOULS”, this was the first band album ever released in Bangladesh. The 80’s line up were Naqib, Tapan, Naseem, Bachhu, Pilu, Rony, Rudy, Shahed, and Newaz. 1980 was the year when, Naseem Ali Khan joined the band as vocalist, Shahbaz khan (Pilu) joined as drummer followed by Ayub Bachhu as lead guitarist. SOULS in this decade made their literal maiden voyage in the luxury liner ” Hizbul Bahar” to the far east.Ĩ0’s were the eventful years of SOULS when the band achieved their towering popularity. This inspired them to participate in the Bangladesh Pop Competition and achieve the best band award in 1975. They started to compose their own music, a fusion of Western Rock, Eastern contemporary and folk music led by musician composer Naqib Uddin Khan. The boys were gifted and felt the desire to create. SOULS in it’s early days played in clubs and houses, playing mostly local and western cover songs. Towards the mid seventies Lulu & Rorenzo left and later Rouf Chowdhury joined in. On their invitation Naqib Uddin Khan, Tapan Chowdhury, Ahmed Newaz, Tajul Imam,, Rorenzo Paul, Rudy Thomas, & Shahed-ul-alam joined the band. The founder members were Subrata Barua (Ronny ), Sajed-ul-Alam and Mumtazul haque (Lulu). A year later the band was renamed “SOULS” marking the birth year of the legendary Band 1973. 'She told me one thing.It was a post war phenomena in the beginning of 70’s era, after the independence of Bangladesh, a group of boys inspired by western ROCK music decided to form a Band naming it Shurela meaning “in tune”.A few of the band members wanted to explore their own musical identity. “I remember I had a tough time keeping a straight face for the photoshoot,” quipped Chiradeep. PGB was recorded at Usha Uthup’s studio by Ephraim Isaacs, eminent illustrator Hiran Mitra created the cover and Thomas Lai took the photograph of the band members. Chiradeep added, “We used to have very long recording sessions and chilled out later at the studio canteen." You can feel that energy in the album,” he recalled. “We were so well coordinated that we could look at each other and jam the whole night. We simply jammed and recorded.” Elaborating on their recording experience, Neil admitted that it was a ‘tightly knit band’. “The instrumental piece,Įlomelo Haowa, was created in the studio. “If I remember correctly, after recording the songs, we still had a bit of recording space left,” said Chiradeep. The lineup for Krosswindz at that time featured Neil and Tuki (Vikramjit Banerjee), on the guitars, Dwight on the Bass, Robin Lai on keyboards, Chiradeep Lahiri on drums and singer Bonnie Chakraborty. Until then, we were catering to the colonially hungover Calcutta - Dwight made us aware of the potential of the content.” Dwight (Pattison, bassist, who passed away in 2013), who was way more mature than most of us, and a formidable presence in the band, insisted that we get the songs going. Prithibi, our rendition of Goutamda’s (Chattopadhyay) song,” he said, adding, “I had written the songs but they were lying around. Before that we had an English album of Krosswindz singles and had also recorded “This was our first Bengali album and we recorded it in a record three days. Neil Mukherjee, writer, composer and guitarist of the ’90s Krosswindz lineup, took us back to those days when the songs were yet to come to life.
